I had reason to say to one of my sons the other day that everyone makes mistakes and that it's how you handle yourself after you make a mistake that is the measure of who you are as a person. Sounds like your son is on his way to being a very good man.

I am so scared about being a good mother to teenagers...

I have one boy (my youngest) who is pretty laid back but will stand up for himself ~ sometimes with his fists. And while I'm happy he'll stand up for himself because I think it's important, I do teach him that it's better to handle conflict with his words. How realistic that is when he's 13, 15, even 18?
